The Department at Hudson’s is a culturally significant venue in downtown Detroit featuring 56,000 square feet of customizable event space. The Department opened in May 2025, following a renovation that reimagined the iconic J.L. Hudson Department Store into the first new skyscraper in Detroit in 50 years. The building now features a modern, high-tech event space capable of accommodating weddings or events with up to 600 people.

“J.L. Hudson’s was the center of Detroit, and the center of many cultural moments and special memories for the people of Detroit and all of Michigan,” says Trina Anthony, director of sales and marketing at The Department. “We are lucky to have such a great opportunity to bring to life an event space that is in the heart of Detroit.”

Across three floors, The Department includes a private lobby, five reconfigurable event halls with custom drop-down walls, and 10 additional smaller spaces, ready for a wide range of events from brunches to get-ready spaces. The Department is transformative in nature, with modular rooms, immersive lighting, and high-tech AV capabilities. 

“Weddings at The Department are anything but traditional, and that’s what makes our building shine,” Anthony says. “We’re ideal for couples who want to be personal and stylish, without following a standard template. It’s very design-forward, with architecture that allows flexibility and thoughtfulness to come together.”

Beyond the space itself, The Department’s event planning team provides a full suite of event planning services, fully inclusive catering, and an onsite pastry chef.
