Where Can You Get Married on The Beach in Michigan?

By Published On: August 29, 2024

Want a dreamy beach wedding without having to fly to the East or West Coast? You’re in the right place. Michigan, while home to an abundance of incredible farmland, valleys, fields, and forests, has beaches that are equally as picturesque and romantic.

Let’s be honest, there’s just something about a beach wedding that strikes a cord in every hopeful romantic’s heart. To walk barefoot down a soft, sandy aisle, locking eyes with the love of your life as your dress gently glides across the sand — beach weddings make the heart flutter. They’re romantic, timeless, simple yet profound.

There is much to be said for choosing this venue for you and your sweetheart to exchange vows. Here are a few of our favorite spots where you can get married on the beach in Michigan.

Planning and Preparation

As romantic as a beach wedding is, preparation is key in case things out of your control occur. For instance, an unusually toasty day could potentially heat the sand to uncomfortable levels, making it less than ideal for barefoot aisle walking. Be sure to pack some pretty rugs to lay over the aisle to better protect your feet. No cloud coverage could mean sunburn and or little to no relief from sun rays, which could make for sweaty ceremony viewing. Sunscreen, aloe, umbrellas, tents and maybe even suggesting to your guests to bring stylish hats to go with their outfits would work and add an element of originality and uniqueness that would only serve to make your day that much more memorable.

When planning your incredible beach wedding, writing out a list will help you narrow down the best choices that will smoothly fit your idea for your special day.

For example:

  1. Location of your wedding?
  2. Date and time of your wedding?
  3. What is your wedding theme/style?
  4. What is your guest list size?
  5. Equipment: chairs, arches, tents?
  6. Liability insurance?
  7. Permits?

Public or Private?

While there are several different public beaches where you can get married — such as Jean Klock Park, Tiscornia Park, Ottawa County Parks, Kirk Park, and many more — there are also private beaches in Michigan that are enchanting for weddings.

Keep in mind that not all beaches in Michigan allow ceremonies while others are open to hosting vows as long as you file and obtain a permit. In order to acquire the permit you will need to contact the local government agency who is in charge of managing that beach, so make sure you do your research.

The best time of year for a beach wedding in Michigan is between June and September. Now, considering that Michigan can be a little unpredictable with its weather, it’s a good idea to have a backup venue in case of any wind or rain. The first two weeks of August are considered the best time in the summer season. The humidity and heat have lessened but the days remain long, making it ideal for sunset ceremonies and outdoor receptions.
