In 1981 Larry and Lisa Walt opened Design 1 Salon Spa. Now, more than forty years later, the beloved beauty destination has expanded to four locations across Grand Rapids. And while Larry and Lisa are still very much involved, their son Graham Walt, Design 1 Salon Spa’s COO, continues to pave new paths for the business.

Today, Design 1 is a full-service salon and spa with facilities in Plainfield, Cascade, Grandville, and Gaines. “We do hair, we do nails, we do skin — like facials— and then body massages,” Walt says. “The biggest thing for us is having a luxury atmosphere and having everything under one roof.” From color and cuts to makeup and manicures, Design 1 has all your traditional beauty needs covered, while also offering the best in skincare, too — think MediSpa facials, microdermabrasion, hair removal, full body salt scrubs or mud masques, permanent cosmetics, cupping, deep tissue massage, and so many more covetable services. “It’s a one-stop shop,” Walt says.

For brides, the ability to book all their wedding-related salon and spa services through the same business is not only convenient but one less stress they’ll need to worry about. The team at Design 1 even took that a step further by now offering a pre-wedding beauty checklist on their website that helps brides know just when to begin booking their hair, nail, or skincare appointments. “Weddings are obviously very daunting,” Walt says, adding that this checklist helps to provide a guideline on when you should get things like facials, waxing and more completed. “It’s a nice roadmap,” he says. Walt recommends to begin booking services at least four months ahead of your big day.

Brides and their besties will also love that each location can host bachelorette parties (or couples showers!) where you can take in treats and drinks between your services.
