Build A Lasting Marriage At The Harris Building
Located in the Heartside District of Grand Rapids for over a century, The Harris Building has gone through many evolutions of its purpose. The venue was built in 1892 as the home to a secret fraternal organization, The Knights of Pythias, before transitioning to a furniture company and even a Grand Rapids ArtPrize Venue over the years – but now, the historical building brings its timeless character and industrial-chic style to couples as the ideal wedding and events venue.
“The Harris Building is unique because we are as close to downtown as you can get,” explains Jennifer Kolster, Director of Event Operations. “As a historic building, it is a hidden gem. It’s hard to tell how beautiful the space is from the outside.”
With 18-foot tall ceilings covered in wooden beams, exposed brick walls, chandeliers, natural hardwood floors, and a domed ceiling, The Harris Building has grown from its industrial roots into a beautiful space that can comfortably fit weddings with up to 260 guests. The building features three distinct spaces, including the main ballroom, a lounge often used as a get-ready room for grooms or buffet dinner setups, and a gallery with large windows overlooking the street for cocktail hours or smaller events.
The Harris Building offers all-inclusive rental packages at two different levels. Packages include event planning and floor plan creation, day-of coordination, full use of all three spaces – as well as tables, linens, chairs, Wi-Fi, premium bridal and groom suites, lounge-style furniture, lighting, and more. Premium packages also include valet parking and DJ services. Rehearsal time is also included for packages with ceremonies. The Harris Building partners with multiple caterers and uses Distinctive Catering for their bar services.
“We pride ourselves on offering specialized services that others don’t,” Jennifer explains. “We are very hands-on with each wedding, because we know how much time and money they have invested into their event. We care about executing all the details exactly as the couple wants, and making sure all their guests are happy and feel welcomed.”
Weddings held at The Harris Building are more than just one-day events – they are the precursor to a lifelong and happy marriage. The team at The Harris Building takes that commitment very seriously, and applies that commitment to every detail of the event.
“Our attention to detail is very important to us,” Jennifer says. “We always say that we love doing weddings, but marriages are what we’re really creating. With our work, we can set a couple up for success by giving them what they need to kick off their marriage.”
