How to Prepare for Wedding Dress Shopping

By Published On: March 31, 2025

Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning. You’ve likely already been scrolling the internet, saving every dream dress that pops into your feed, picturing what it would look like walking down the aisle.

For many brides, wedding dress shopping is one of the first moments when it truly sinks in —you’re getting married! 🥂 It’s a special moment shared with some of your closest loved ones. If you’ve started prepping for that special day, we’ve compiled a list on how to prepare for wedding dress shopping, from setting your budget to what to bring to your appointment.

How to Prepare for Wedding Dress Shopping

1. Set a Budget

Wedding dresses come in all price ranges, so it’s crucial to set a realistic budget before you start shopping. Research bridal shops and ask what their price range is for wedding gowns. Some bridal shops start under $1000 for dresses, while designer or couture shops often have a much higher minimum for dresses.  Keep in mind that alterations, accessories, and taxes can add to the final cost. Be upfront with your bridal consultant about your budget to avoid falling in love with a dress that’s out of reach. In 2025, the average cost of a wedding dress is between $1,800 and $3,500.

2. Pin & Save Wedding Dress Styles You Love

Look at gorgeous dresses online before your appointment? Hard ask, we know! 😉

Before your appointment, browse wedding dress styles to get a sense of what you like. Check out Pinterest, bridal magazines, and designers’ websites to see different silhouettes, fabrics, and details. While it’s great to have inspiration, keep an open mind—many brides end up choosing a style they never expected to love.

3. Choose the Right Shopping Crew

While it’s tempting to invite all your bridesmaids, mom, and future in-laws, too many opinions can be overwhelming. Stick to a small group of people whose opinions you trust and who will support your vision. Once you get there, remember that although family opinions are nice, yours is the only opinion that truly matters! Don’t give up on your dream dress just because someone may have an opinion about it.

4. Book Appointments in Advance

Most bridal shops require appointments, especially on weekends. Book ahead to ensure you get the best service and enough time to try on multiple dresses. If possible, schedule appointments at more than one boutique to see a variety of options. Plan to make your appointment at least one month ahead of time, but some popular bridal shops may require even more notice.

5. Wear the Right Undergarments

The right undergarments can make a big difference in how a dress fits. Wear nude, seamless underwear and consider bringing a strapless bra if you’re trying on different necklines. Some brides also bring shapewear if they plan to wear it on their wedding day.

6. Bring Shoes With a Similar Heel Height

If you already have your wedding shoes, bring them! If not, bring a pair with a heel height similar to what you plan to wear. This will give you a better idea of how the dress will look and help with alterations later on.

7. Keep an Open Mind

You might have a dream dress in mind, but be open to trying on different styles. Bridal consultants have experience and may suggest silhouettes that flatter your body type in ways you didn’t expect. Even if you think you won’t like the dress, try it on anyway. You might be surprised! Brides often go into their appointment with a specific dress in mind, only to choose something totally different in the end.

8. Plan for Alterations

Most wedding dresses need alterations to achieve the perfect fit. Factor in time and budget for this process—alterations can take a few months, so start shopping early to avoid last-minute stress. Be sure to have a line item in your wedding budget for alterations, which typically cost between $150-$500 dollars.

9. Take Photos and Notes

If the boutique allows it, take photos of your favorite dresses from different angles. Also, jot down details about what you loved (or didn’t love) about each dress to help you compare options later. Not only will the photos be fun to look back on down the road, but if you didn’t find “the one” at the appointment, you will have beneficial notes for your next bridal consultant.

10. Trust Your Instincts

At the end of the day, the most important opinion is yours! If a dress makes you feel beautiful and confident, that’s what matters most. Don’t let pressure from others sway your decision—when you find “the one,” you’ll know. If you are stuck between a few dresses, try them all on again. You’d be surprised how much that helps make the final decision.

You only get to go wedding dress shopping once in your life – enjoy EVERY moment. Hug your mom, take pictures with your best friend, bring your grandma, and most of all, have fun!

Finding that perfect dress is one of those moments and lifelong memories you will cherish forever.  Make sure to take a step back to soak up the moment. We cannot wait for you to find your dream dress!
