Inspiration for a Black-Tie Boho Wedding

By Published On: January 17, 2024

A Black-tie boho wedding sounds a bit contradictory — the two styles are usually considered opposites. Boho inspiration is all about being carefree and relaxed, while black tie is formal with guests wearing tuxedos and ballgowns. But we all know opposites attract! When you look at current wedding trends, couples are combining themes to make their weddings their own. So why not combine two of the most popular styles? You end up with a little bit of glam and a little bit of boho for a magical wedding theme. Not sure where to even begin? Read below for inspiration for a black-tie boho wedding.

Attire

When it comes to attire for a black-tie boho wedding, think sleek and clean lines. The attire should have minimal embellishments. Styles should be simple and understated. Add some charm with a dramatic veil or floral accessories.

When shopping for a wedding dress for your black-tie boho wedding, opt for a dress that has fluid motion and clean lines in whatever silhouette you want. Most dresses for this theme are minimal, with subtle beading or embroidery. When it comes to fabrics, silk or satin are the best to achieve this look.

Grooms and Groomsmen

Men’s attire is much easier since the words “black tie” are in the name. A tuxedo is a classic option but when you add the word “boho” to your black-tie theme, you have a bit more room to play around with your look. Instead of a white shirt, you can wear a black shirt for an all-black ensemble. Or instead of a black suit jacket, wear a white one. Instead of wearing a black tuxedo or suit, pick a suit and shirt in all one color for a monochrome look.

Bridal Party

The rules are simple for the bridal party — follow the lead of the bride and groom. The groomsmen should be in the groom’s choice of color. For an elegant look for the bridesmaids, opt for a neutral and monochrome palette. To add a bit of boho to the look, add some greenery either with the bouquets or in floral head/hair pieces. For a wedding to be truly a black tie affair, men need to be in tuxes while women in full-length gowns.

Venue

The best part of a black-tie boho wedding is that almost every venue will work. Whether it’s a church, conservatory or even a rooftop, most venue types will work. However, there are some factors to consider.

No matter what category your wedding venue falls into, one of the most important things to keep in mind is the color of the venue. Try to avoid venues with bright colors or patterned carpets. The simpler the better. Look for venues with natural wood floors, exposed bricks, neutral walls, glass accents, etc.

Industrial venues work great for black-tie boho weddings. The slate tone palette is minimal yet sophisticated and the sharp edges can easily become softened with a romantic touch of flowers and drapery.

A conservatory is another great wedding venue option for this theme. The abundant amount of foliage and greenery inside plays towards the boho style. And all of the glass windows are sleek and modern for a black tie vibe.

These are just a couple of venues that will work with this theme, but like we mentioned above, most venue types can easily accommodate this theme.

Decor

Earthy colors, greenery, and white flowers are just a few elements that will keep your wedding looking formal yet bohemian at the same time. Keep the tablescape palette simple. First pick a neutral and start from there. Then you can bring out other details such as textured linens, pops of gold, signage, etc. Add lush colors in either the flowers or linens, gold flatware or gold rimmed dishes, elegant candle holders, etc. Don’t go too crazy on the accent colors. When in doubt, layer white on white and then add pops of gold and greenery!

Florals

One of the best ways to turn a black tie wedding into black-tie boho is to add greenery. Decorate the venue with lots of greenery arrangements. Think vines, leaves, foliage. The greenery can even replace a table runner! While white florals are the best option for this theme, if white isn’t your thing, add a mixture of fresh and dried flowers for some warmth.

Lighting

Since you don’t get to choose the lighting fixtures in a venue, the best way to add boho formal vibes is with candles. Keep it simple with white or ivory candles or pick another color from your color scheme.

Signage

Keep it simple with elegant and minimal designs. The use of modern text and negative space shows that less is more. If you want a more boho vibe, add a floral design or caligraphy. A fun neon sign with your last name also fits into this category. It will make your decor pop, yet the design is sleek and sophisticated.

Hopefully these ideas give you plenty of inspiration for a black-tie boho wedding!
