Best Month for a Destination Wedding in Hawai’i

By Published On: September 2, 2024

Hawai’i is a magical place to say “I Do.” But how do you determine the best month to get married when the state is known for its year-round perfect weather? Let’s break down the details to help you decide the best month for a destination wedding in Hawai’i.

Spring

Spring is usually associated with the familiar expression “Love is in the air,” and in the month of March that can certainly hold true. With the tourist season winding down, deals can be found because of the decreased number of island visitors. Rates will be lower; however, there is a higher chance of rain, putting limitations on outdoor venues.

Between the months of March to early April, tradewind weather can bring wind speeds of 30 mph or higher for several days.

April to May are fantastic months for weather conditions. However, with May being right next to hurricane season which on average starts on June 1, it’s safest to plan your celebration for early May just in case storm season arrives a little early.

Hawai’i’s spring months, tradewind weather notwithstanding, offer the most enjoyable breezes, glorious sunshine and refreshing light showers that serve to brighten the green foliage blanketing the islands.

Storm Season

Hawai’i’s storm season begins June 1 and goes through November 30, with August being the peak month for storms. July, August, and September see the brunt of the hurricane season.

However, September to November is less crowded and offer lower rates, and even with these months occurring in Hawai’i’s storm season, the weather is still quite comfortable.

Winter

December to January is the holiday season, so you can expect larger crowds, higher rates, longer wait times at restaurants, and higher traffic on the streets. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and simply soak up and enjoy the calmer, more grounding pace of the beautiful islands, then the winter months aren’t an ideal time to exchange your vows in Hawai’i.

Temperatures

Between March and September the islands experience the highest temperatures, coupled with the least amount of rain fall, making outdoor venues and celebrations a lesser risk in terms of experiencing downpours, strong winds and heavy cloud coverage. The coldest month is January, with an average of 73F (22C), and the hottest month is August, coming in at an average of 81F (27C). The longest sunshine hours you can find in a day will be had in the month of July, with 11 hours of sunshine to explore, swim, laugh and enjoy the magic of Hawai’i.

Although Hawai’i’s rainy season is November through March, rainfall can occur at any time, primarily on the windward, northeastern parts of the islands.

Travel

The best and cheapest time to fly to Hawai’i is in February through early May and September through October. The most expensive time to fly is in December and January, which is considered the holiday travel season.

Tourist Season

Let’s talk July — peak tourist time on the islands. The beaches are incredibly crowded, rates are higher, and it’s necessary to schedule reservations months in advance.

April, May, October and November are deemed the best four months to visit Hawai’i, as the temperatures are oh so ideal, the amount of tourists is significantly less than the other eight months, and with so many different events and activities taking place on the islands, these four months of the year offer a wonderful opportunity to experience Hawai’i in a different way than the other eight months.

Conclusion

Factoring in climate, holiday season, rainy season, hurricane season, tourists, and expenses, the winner is the month of April. It’s outside the busy tourist and holiday seasons with their increased traffic and rates, the temperatures are ideal with refreshing rain showers here and there, and you can find great deals at venues and resorts.

Regardless of what time of year you and your sweetheart decide to marry in Hawai’i, whether that be in the middle of peak tourist season, holiday season, Hawai’i’s slow season or hurricane season, your wedding and celebration of love is going to be magical, incredible, memorable, romantic and timeless.
