1. Have a Plan B
Mother Nature doesn’t care about your wedding day—sorry, she just doesn’t. Always have a backup plan in case of rain, wind, or surprise snow (yep, even in April). A nearby indoor space, a tent with walls, or a covered pavilion will give you peace of mind. If the tempature is looking cold, get some patio heaters to help keep everyone warm and comfortable, even well into the night.
2. Choose the Right Season for Your Location
Outdoor weddings are very location-specific. A summer wedding in Michigan? Lovely. A summer wedding in Arizona? Melt-your-makeup hot. Know your region’s weather patterns and pick your date accordingly.
3. Rent the Right Gear
Make sure your rental company provides weather-appropriate seating, sturdy tables, and flooring options. For beach or grassy weddings, consider flooring that prevents heels from sinking—and if you’re tenting, make sure it can handle wind or rain. Sit down with your rental company beforehand and make sure you go over your wedding location, the terrain, and anything additional they should know about the outdoor space.

4. Prep for Wind
Wind is sneaky. It can blow over flower arrangements, take down your welcome sign, and turn a veil into a kite. Secure decor, choose heavier centerpieces, and consider skipping anything lightweight or overly delicate. When you’re checking whether for your big day, don’t forget to look at forcasted wind. Weather can play tricks on your when it says sunny, but forcasted winds say gusts up to 20 mph. Check often and plan ahead!
5. Light It Up
If your celebration goes into the evening, you’ll need lighting. Think string lights, lanterns, uplighting in trees, and candles in windproof holders. Bonus: great lighting = dreamy photos and magical vibes.
6. Keep the Bugs Away
Mosquitoes are not on your guest list. Have citronella candles, bug spray stations, or even professional pest control treatments a day or two before your wedding. For bonus points, give guests mini bug repellents as favors.

7. Keep Guests Comfortable
Your guests will thank you for considering their comfort. Offer parasols or fans for sunny ceremonies, cozy blankets for cool evenings, and plenty of hydration no matter the season.
8. Invest in a Good Tent (If Needed)
Tents are your best friend for outdoor weddings—especially if there’s any chance of rain. Clear tents create a dreamy “indoor-outdoor” feel and still let in the view. Add draping or greenery to soften the look and elevate the vibe.
9. Prep Your Beauty Game
Humidity, wind, and heat can all mess with your hair and makeup. Hire pros who specialize in outdoor weddings, and ask for long-lasting, weatherproof products. Pack a touch-up kit with blotting paper, setting spray, and lipstick for on-the-go fixes.

10. Think About Sound
Outdoor acoustics can be tricky—especially if you’re near water, wind, or traffic. Rent a quality sound system and use microphones for your ceremony so your vows don’t get lost in the breeze. Ask your DJ or entertainment about what they recommend for sound based on your specific venue and setup. Many times, they will be able to handle it like pros!
11. Don’t Forget the Restrooms
If your venue doesn’t have restrooms nearby, rent upscale portable ones (trust us, your guests will appreciate it). Many companies offer air-conditioned, decorated options that don’t scream “porta-potty.”
12. Scout the Sunset Time
Golden hour photos? Yes, please. Ask your photographer when the best light will hit your ceremony space, and plan your schedule accordingly. You’ll thank yourself every time you look at your album.
